Riffelhaus 1853
The Riffelhaus 1853 is perched peacefully on the side of the Riffelberg mountain at 2,548 metres. Its famous neighbour, the Matterhorn greets restaurant visitors and hotel guests alike which have included famous mountaineers and European royalty. Its 25 rooms and suites all offer splendid views of the surrounding mountains and in the spa, you can enjoy a Jacuzzi session facing the magnificent Matterhorn.

1852 to 1854
A place of rugged beauty
Vicar Joseph Ruden and two local friends buy land on the Riffelberg from the Burgergemeinde Zermatt and build the highest hotel in Europe with 18 beds.
1855
A glorious first ascent
On 1st August 1855 the highest point of the Monte Rosa is reached from the Riffelhaus. On the team are two mountain guides from Zermatt, Johannes and Matthäus Zumtaugwald.
1854 to 1864
The golden age
The Riffelhaus writes mountaineering history. The hotel’s guest book documents he spirit of the time.
1864
Starting point for high ambitions
From the hotel, the summits of the Monte Rosa mountain range are conquered. The Burgergemeinde buys the hotel and extends it to 30 rooms with two dining rooms and a kitchen.
1878
Intoxicated by danger and adventure
In his travel diary Mark Twain describes his expedition on the Riffelberg with 154 People and 51 Animals. On 18. August 1878 he ascends the Gornergrat on foot together with Harris Twichel and stays overnight in room 32 of the Riffelhaus.
Until 1898
On duty every day
20 mules and countless sedan chair bearers assist tourists in the enjoyment of the recently popular world wonders Riffelberg and Gornergrat.
1898
A technical miracle
In only 3 yeras the Gornergrat railway is built with the help of 3,000 maily Italian workers and hardly any mechanical aid.
1965
Women in Love
World famous film director Ken Russel shoots his famous film on the Riffelberg.
2014
A source of one’s own and solid craftsmanship
The hotel Riffelberg is renovated throughout proudly carries the name Riffelhaus once more.
2015
The Matterhorn Story
For the 150th anniversary of the Matterhorn ascent, director Livia Anne Richard portrays the true heros and heroines in fron the of the dramatic backdrop in her open air play.

Arrival by car
Zermatt is car-free. There is a shuttle train from Täsch, where you park your car, to Zermatt every 20 minutes. Once arrived in Zermatt, you cross the station forecourt to the Gornergrat railway station. After you have boarded your cog wheel train, you will reach the Riffelberg station by the hotel within 25 minutes. Please note that transportation is not included in the price of the hotel stay.
